CROSSINGS

Drawing the Border of Water

Brief:

translate a gallery visit experience into a form of publication

Solution:

a zine that talks about my experience as an exhibiting artist in a collaboration with the Migrant Writers of Singapore. It explores the restrictions of invisible geographical lines.

The Migrant Writers of Singapore are a collective for migrant workers to participate in art and literature within a safe and inclusive space.

As an artist I was paired with Danushka Jayakodi, a Sri Lankan woman who used a Sinhala to English dictionary to write poetry. This editorial talks about my experience in visually translating her story of migration.

Amplifying Voices

I responded to her poetry with paintings, embroidery, digital illustrations, and shared experiences about growing up outside your home country. The paintings were made using clay sourced from Sri Lanka, while the editorial was bound by stitching to reference Danushka's embroidery practice.

Every artist and writer involved participated through their second or third language. This editorial is a way of documenting how visual communication can be effective even when people don't fully understand each other.
