The Essex Serpent

Responding to the themes of loss, self discovery and personal growth in The Essex Serpent, the design features the mythical serpent that the characters spend the novel hunting for, patterned with blue flowers which acted as a symbol for death. The typeface was chosen based on decorative letterforms present in the late 1800's, the time period that the novel was set in. The cover is complete with a formation of waves created using paper quilling to reference the intricate metaphors about water and the way of life and nature described in the novel.
